In this week, our choreography were set another task to help us create phrases which was the use of gestures. Each of us individually had to come up with a gesture lasting around a couple of seconds and each gesture representing our stimulus of the mental asylum.

Above in this clip is all of our individual gestures from following our main stimulus. After those are shown, you will see a series of phrases that we have created from each of our gestures. We included the use of levels, we thought about the dynamics of each movement and the intention about.
My gesture in particular, I focused on the word "controlled" as I thought it fitted clearly with being restrained in the asylum. The first and orginal gesture starts with wrapping my arms one at a time, one arm on my shoulder, one arm on my waist showing the way I could be "restrained" and "controlled". After the arm movement, I simply roll my head round in a circle implying yet the idea of being controlled but the use of my head clearly shows the mental side of the trauma.
We came together to add to the gesture and decided to jump back when the arm movement is being performed which could represent being pushed back or us fighting back against the hosptial workers trying to keep us restrained. The head roll developed into a bigger movement, keeping the head roll but with it leading with a big circular movement with the body.
Towards the end of the lesson, we had time to play around with formations of each phrase and as we are the only group with an odd amount of people, we found new ways to perform the phrases compared to the other 2 groups who have an even number of people.

I really like how thoughtful you have been with the purpose of each movement and I think your gestures are very effective and powerful. What do you think will be the effect on the audience by repeating this gestures throughout you choreography?
ReplyDeleteRepeating these certain gestures, especially using the choreographic device : unison, will give off the impression of us, as patients, that we are being controlled and forced to do certain things which will clearly link to our stimulus.
DeleteI really enjoyed watching your gestures and how you explored the word "controlled" and "restrained". How did you find creating formations with an odd number of people in your group?
ReplyDeleteFor me personally, creating formations with an odd amount of people is better than an even amount so that everyone can a moment in the centre and it makes certain formations, such as a triangle, fit better.
DeleteI like how you have use words such as 'controlled' to create gestures. How do you think the audience will feel when you perform this? Is that the effect you want to have on the audience?
ReplyDeleteSimular to what I mentioned above in Daisy's question, having us portraying the idea of being "controlled" will show the audience the clear link to our stimulus and the characterisation we will convey.
