choreography module: second week

In the second week, myself and my group came together to decide on our own stimulis to bring into the choreography lesson. We chose a picture of a hand which consisted of lots of linear lines and patterns.

In our groups, we went around the room and observed and analysed the other groups stimulis and ideas and commented a word or two that we thought as a group represented the picture clearly.
The words and ideas that were written about our stimulis was the following:

* shapes
*different pathways
*linear and curved lines
*black and white
*intertwined
*represents DNA and information
*the idea of leaving DNA behind
*hand - the idea of contact
*transfer of DNA
*contrast

From the selection of words we were given, we chose 3 that stood out for us and created 4 movements/motifs for each word. Each movement had to be 8 counts and altogether should create 12 movements. The first word we chose was 'contrast':

1st movement - arm swipes head, grab arm up then down.
2nd movement - soft swirls arm breathe over.
3rd movement - soft side bends up and over.
4th movement - sharp swipe of the arm and it loops over bringing together to create a canon down.

The second words were 'different pathways':

5th movement - corkscrew down to leap to kneel.
6th movement - sitting in second to twist round with the hands and roll around.
7th movement - step out arms out then make a circle behind the body.
8th movement - cartwheel like movement which leads into a drag turn.

The third and final word was 'intertwining':

9th movement - swipe arms to clasp.
10th movement - turn with hugging arms.
11th movement - shoulders fold over, touch hands to unfold up.
12th movement - twist arms and fold to hold leg to bring up.

After we created all of the movements, our next task was to number them 1-12. Once we did that, a dice was thrown and whatever number was rolled became the order of how we were to perform the movements altogether. The sequence after the dice was rolled was: 1, 11, 6, 9, 8, 9, 6, 2, 10, 5, 12, 7, 10, 3, 4.
The lesson today we found to learn the technique on finding patterns and movements and putting them together to create a larger phrase. This is preparing us for when the time comes for us to choreograph our own motifs for our own stimulus.

  1. You have explained the task well and including the description of each movement really helps me to imagine the process you took and phrase that you created. How did you find this task and would you like to use a method of chance like this within your final group choreography?

    1. Thankyou for your comment Daisy. I think the task where we look at the stimulus and pick out words to create movement with will definetly be a way I will personally create movement later down the line when it comes to creating the group piece.

  2. I really enjoyed reading your blog and you have gone into very clear detail about the motif you created. You have included a list of the words explored in the lesson, did you find doing this task helpful in creating different methods to choreograph?

    1. I did find this task really helpful for creating movement as I felt personally making the movement based on the words can help you choose certain dynamics and emotion behind it. For example; one of the words we had "shapes", so we decided to perform the movement with sharp and strong dynamics.

  3. I like how much detail you have gone into in this blog. I also like how you have set out the blog. Do you think you would use this task again to create choreography in the future? Why?

    1. As mentioned above, I will most likely use this choreography method to create movement in the final group choreography.

choreography module: evaluation upon final performance

As mentioned in previous blogs, I have been injured with a badly sprained ankle and I am coming into my 4th week after the accident. Due to this unfortunately happening, I was unable to perform with my group in the choreography assessment. However, I will be performing it in the new year whether it being in January or in the Spring assessments in March. I think it will be challenging due to us having the 3 week christmas break and not having much time to rehearse when we come back for the new term. But for me, I will spend my break rewatching the video of the piece for familiarise and learn the movement so when we do come back, we won't be spending too much with me learning the movement and we can spend the time on the formations and the timings.

choreography module: evaluation

As we come to the final week before the assessment, this blog will be mainly focusing on the overview on how I found the process of creating our choreography. Our choreography was solely based on the idea of being patients in a mental asylum and the patients different characteristics in particular. One of the main intensions is that we want the audience to feel the emotions we will be portraying when we perform the piece for example; one of the ending sections called 'Straitjackets', the feelings behind the movement is quiet emotional which we will show by how we perform the dynamics in the dance, facial expressions and eye contact with the audience. At the beginning of the process, we fully concentrated on our stimulus which was the picture of the hallway which is shown below. We did end up to focus on other ideas based on the mental asylum and getting slightly off track but in the 3rd or 4th choreography session, we decided to mainly concentrate on the picture and made that o...

choreography module: first week

In our first choreography lesson, we got seperated in our household groups which is a group of 3 in my case. Each group was given a picture based on the arts as a political statement and as a group we had to write down our thoughts and feelings that came to mind while looking at each picture. The first picture me and my group analysed was of the navity being somewhat protected and shielded by a wall. This wall was covered in graffiti with words such as 'love' with a peace symbol as the o and a skull which could perhaps represent death. However, central of the wall seems to be a bullet hole but as we discussed further with this, because this hole is above the nativity, we thought it could represent the north star. After discovering that this artwork was created by the artist 'Banksy', we linked it back to the subject of the lesson which was arts as a political statement so we associated it with perhaps religious hate crime. The second picture is taken in an art gallery w...
