As we come to the final week before the assessment, this blog will be mainly focusing on the overview on how I found the process of creating our choreography.
Our choreography was solely based on the idea of being patients in a mental asylum and the patients different characteristics in particular. One of the main intensions is that we want the audience to feel the emotions we will be portraying when we perform the piece for example; one of the ending sections called 'Straitjackets', the feelings behind the movement is quiet emotional which we will show by how we perform the dynamics in the dance, facial expressions and eye contact with the audience. At the beginning of the process, we fully concentrated on our stimulus which was the picture of the hallway which is shown below. We did end up to focus on other ideas based on the mental asylum and getting slightly off track but in the 3rd or 4th choreography session, we decided to mainly concentrate on the picture and made that our entrance piece. From this chosen stimulus, we went and did individual research on mental asylums and we came across 'The Pilgrim Psychiatric Centre' and this is where we drew most of our inspiration from.
The overall experience I think has defintely made me grow in terms of creating movement. Looking back to the first few weeks where we were taught all the different techniques on creating movements and building from one movement to a whole sequence. Having these choreography sessions I think personally has been very beneficial to our group and when it came to actually creating our piece, we use most maybe all of the choreography techniques. However, as I mentioned in an earlier blog, I unfortunately am still injured and will not be performing with my group in the assessment next week. Having this happen has defintely lead to some challenges but me and my group have become successful and overcame them but when it comes to the time that I can perform with my group it will all come together. Overall, I think that our choreography was worked out really well and it clearly links to our chosen idea.

It is good that you have found the methods and techniques that you learnt at the start of the module to be beneficial for your own choreographic process and have helped you to keep a focus on your stimulus idea. What have been some of the positives and negatives of your group dynamic, or any challenges you have faced with working as a group and how you overcame these?
ReplyDeleteDue to the rules of social distancing, we were unable to do proper contact work and floor work which definetly wasn't the ideal situation but apart from that and me being unable to perform the choreography with my group, everything worked out the way we wanted and the whole choreography piece was a successful.
DeleteThis is a really good evaluation of your choreography piece. I really like the fact you have mentioned how you found the choreographic method lessons and that they were beneficial to you. does this mean this is something you will use in the future when choreographing?
ReplyDeleteThankyou for your comment Abi. When it comes to choreographing our 10 minute solo in our third and final year at the school, I will definetly use the techniques for when it comes to creating movement and motifs for that.
DeleteWell done. Overall , do you think you have achieved what you wanted over the time given? Is there anything you would change about the process if you were to do it again?
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I would change honestly is me being injured. It has had its benefits as I was able to be an outside perspective and given certain feedback to the group but for me personally, I missed performing with my group and missed being more in the creating part for the last few minutes of the choreography but I will perform this piece in the early year of 2021 and include all I have talked about in my previous blogs when I finally dance the piece.
