choreography module: third week

In this weeks lesson we were given a task where we had to start standing in a line. The first person in the line was given an adjective such as 'heavy' or 'gentle' and from that word they had to create a motif. From then, the second person in line could watch the movement twice and try and remember it for the third person in the line. We did this activity 4 times creating 4 motifs. Due to the short amount of time we had to watch and remember each motif, once it got to the last person performing what they tried to remember, it always seemed slightly different to the original motif whether it was missing a movement entirely or just using the wrong arm. From this we ended up having the original and the slightly changed version which gave us 8 movements created altogether.

Once we put all of the movements together giving us a bigger phrase we were told to focus on the formations and choreographic devices we can add into our phrase. For the first original motif we decided to stand in a diagonal line with a slight canon and straight after in the same formation we performed the changed version of that motif.

The second formation for the second original motif we created a straight horizontal line facing the front all performing the motif in unison.

The third formation for the third original motif to create a triangle where the two people on the end of the line jumped backwards and then the second jump in the phrase was excecuted in canon with the point of the triangle jumping first then the back left person then the right.

The fourth formation for the fourth original motif was from the triangle into a circle and traveling in a circle whilst performing the motif in unison.

After that motif we start to perform the rest of the changed motifs continuing on, we show the second changed motif in a straight horizontal line facing the back in unison.

The third changed motif was executed in canon with the person on the left of the line starting first still facing the back, then the person in the middle changed to face the front and perform the canon second, following on the person on the right who is showing the canon facing the back.

The final changed motif still stayed in the line but facing the right side starting with the person on the right side performing the accumilation, the person in the middle following them and the person at the end finishing the motif.

This class showed us another technique on how to create motifs and phrases simular to last week with the use of creating movements from words but in this case we focused on formations and devices we can use when it comes to creating our choreographies later on in these couple of months.

  1. This is a really clear and well-structured explanation and it is impressive that your group managed to use a wide variety of formations and devices. Did you also experiment with any changes in dynamic and if so what kind of effect did this give/ would you like it to give if you tried this in the future?

    1. Thankyou for your comment Daisy. In the sections where we performed the original and the different motifs, we decided to change the dynamics to either the orignal or changed motif. We did this so you could see a clear change of the motifs and just a time to explore what we could do with the movements we had.

  2. This blog is really detailed and you have explored the lesson tasks really well. How did you find doing the Translation method? is this task something you feel like you could incorporate in choreographing your group piece?

    1. I personally found that this task was slightly challenging due to the part of remembering the movement. But in the end, having not remembered the motif exactly, that lead our group having 2 motifs with each word which gave us more material. I don't think I will use this technique for future choreographing.

  3. I like how much detail you have gone into to describe every step you took in the lesson. Did you like this task? Was it challenging? Would you use this task in the future?

    1. As mentioned above in Daisy and Abigail's comment, I don't think I will use this choreographic process to create movement in the future.

choreography module: evaluation

As we come to the final week before the assessment, this blog will be mainly focusing on the overview on how I found the process of creating our choreography. Our choreography was solely based on the idea of being patients in a mental asylum and the patients different characteristics in particular. One of the main intensions is that we want the audience to feel the emotions we will be portraying when we perform the piece for example; one of the ending sections called 'Straitjackets', the feelings behind the movement is quiet emotional which we will show by how we perform the dynamics in the dance, facial expressions and eye contact with the audience. At the beginning of the process, we fully concentrated on our stimulus which was the picture of the hallway which is shown below. We did end up to focus on other ideas based on the mental asylum and getting slightly off track but in the 3rd or 4th choreography session, we decided to mainly concentrate on the picture and made that o...

choreography module: seventh week

In the first week back, we ended up having the whole group back together again so we were able feel more confident in building on more choreography. This week in particular we decided on focusing on the whole beginning section of the choreography which will show the audience us, as the patients, entering the mental asylum.  The movement in this section, we wanted to have fluid elements to represent us being weak but once we 'arrive' at the asylum, we wanted to include sharper and more intricate movements to show the more robotic side to portray the idea of being controlled.  An example of this is shown when the group of all 5 of us are placed in a triangle with Storm placed at the front, following by Sadie and Bella on either side of her, then myself and Lucy following them. We then executed a series of intricate movments in the choreographic device of canon as we thought as a group that this device would be most effective and suit this section of the choreography well. We als...

choreography module: second week

In the second week, myself and my group came together to decide on our own stimulis to bring into the choreography lesson. We chose a picture of a hand which consisted of lots of linear lines and patterns. In our groups, we went around the room and observed and analysed the other groups stimulis and ideas and commented a word or two that we thought as a group represented the picture clearly. The words and ideas that were written about our stimulis was the following: * shapes *different pathways *linear and curved lines *black and white *intertwined *represents DNA and information *the idea of leaving DNA behind *hand - the idea of contact *transfer of DNA *contrast From the selection of words we were given, we chose 3 that stood out for us and created 4 movements/motifs for each word. Each movement had to be 8 counts and altogether should create 12 movements. The first word we chose was 'contrast': 1st movement - arm swipes head, grab arm up then down. 2nd movement - soft swir...
