choreography module: first week

In our first choreography lesson, we got seperated in our household groups which is a group of 3 in my case. Each group was given a picture based on the arts as a political statement and as a group we had to write down our thoughts and feelings that came to mind while looking at each picture.

The first picture me and my group analysed was of the navity being somewhat protected and shielded by a wall. This wall was covered in graffiti with words such as 'love' with a peace symbol as the o and a skull which could perhaps represent death. However, central of the wall seems to be a bullet hole but as we discussed further with this, because this hole is above the nativity, we thought it could represent the north star. After discovering that this artwork was created by the artist 'Banksy', we linked it back to the subject of the lesson which was arts as a political statement so we associated it with perhaps religious hate crime.

The second picture is taken in an art gallery where there are multiple sculptures but in the centre of it all is a specific sculpture that does have a human form. The person seems to be covered in an oil like liquid but the coverage of it is streaky and doesn't cover the whole body. They are also facing away from all the visitors, laying in a fetus position which could visualise a sense of vulnerability. Elaborating on with the idea of the oil, it could represent our environmental damage and it has been caused by us meaning its our fault and they are putting it on display.

The third picture was of a group of people being segregated by what looks like a wall straight down the middle. However, coming out of the wall are pink seasaws perhaps as there are people sitting on the opposite ends of them showing that they want to be together but they're unable to due to the wall. This links back to the main topic of art in a political statement as many could presume this is the wall that Donald Trump as it could demonstrate the political divide between America and Mexico where the rich are lifting the poor up, emotionally and physically.

The fourth picture consists of a group of women protesting against what could potentionally be a cry for help as they have their hands tied above their heads as if they were surrendering to something. Some of the women have blindfolds over their eyes and a green cloth wrapped around their wrists or necks which could resemble what they are protesting for whether it's a political matter or something else.

The final picture we analysed was a portrait of Breonna Taylor however, the portrait is half finished. There are areas of colour which could enhance the idea that the coloured areas are revealing more apart her where as the blank areas could show the feeling of hiding the identity. The expression on her face looks emotionless and empty which could represent that theres more life rather than exisiting.

After looking into all the pictures, our group decided on the third stimulis to focus on and chose 3 words to create a phrase.

Comments

  1. You have clearly shown how you expanded your ideas and picked out certain features of the stimuli to make unique and interesting interpretations. How did you find creating a phrase from a stimulus and what kind of atmosphere did you hope to create with your choreography?

    2. Thankyou for your comment Daisy. I found that creating phrases of movement based of a picture stimulus was actually quiet challenging as normally when you create movement from a stimulus, you go into more depth and research so you can pick out on more including the feelings behind the movement and other initial ideas from it.

  2. You have made some clear points and explored the tasks in the lesson really well. Maybe think about including pictures of the 5 stimuli that you are speaking about. You have explored some features of each stimulus really clearly. How did you find creating the small motif based on your chosen stimulus?

    1. For me personally, I find it harder to choreograph visually from a picture or something simular so I remember looking back at the chosen stimulus multiple times during the choreographic process so I could pick up on all of the details of the picture and the message behind it so we could clearly show this when we perform the phrase to an audience.

  3. Well done Hannah. This is a very detailed blog however next time to make sure to add pictures so that the reader can visualise what you are describing.

  4. Thankyou for your comment Sadie. For my blogs going forward I will make sure to include pictures. I did struggle to download them from the email the teacher gave us but in the future I will include them in.

choreography module: evaluation

As we come to the final week before the assessment, this blog will be mainly focusing on the overview on how I found the process of creating our choreography. Our choreography was solely based on the idea of being patients in a mental asylum and the patients different characteristics in particular. One of the main intensions is that we want the audience to feel the emotions we will be portraying when we perform the piece for example; one of the ending sections called 'Straitjackets', the feelings behind the movement is quiet emotional which we will show by how we perform the dynamics in the dance, facial expressions and eye contact with the audience. At the beginning of the process, we fully concentrated on our stimulus which was the picture of the hallway which is shown below. We did end up to focus on other ideas based on the mental asylum and getting slightly off track but in the 3rd or 4th choreography session, we decided to mainly concentrate on the picture and made that o...

choreography module: seventh week

In the first week back, we ended up having the whole group back together again so we were able feel more confident in building on more choreography. This week in particular we decided on focusing on the whole beginning section of the choreography which will show the audience us, as the patients, entering the mental asylum.  The movement in this section, we wanted to have fluid elements to represent us being weak but once we 'arrive' at the asylum, we wanted to include sharper and more intricate movements to show the more robotic side to portray the idea of being controlled.  An example of this is shown when the group of all 5 of us are placed in a triangle with Storm placed at the front, following by Sadie and Bella on either side of her, then myself and Lucy following them. We then executed a series of intricate movments in the choreographic device of canon as we thought as a group that this device would be most effective and suit this section of the choreography well. We als...

choreography module: second week

In the second week, myself and my group came together to decide on our own stimulis to bring into the choreography lesson. We chose a picture of a hand which consisted of lots of linear lines and patterns. In our groups, we went around the room and observed and analysed the other groups stimulis and ideas and commented a word or two that we thought as a group represented the picture clearly. The words and ideas that were written about our stimulis was the following: * shapes *different pathways *linear and curved lines *black and white *intertwined *represents DNA and information *the idea of leaving DNA behind *hand - the idea of contact *transfer of DNA *contrast From the selection of words we were given, we chose 3 that stood out for us and created 4 movements/motifs for each word. Each movement had to be 8 counts and altogether should create 12 movements. The first word we chose was 'contrast': 1st movement - arm swipes head, grab arm up then down. 2nd movement - soft swir...
